How to Get Here

Scafell Pike is situated in a part of the UK with limited public transport options. When you plan your journey, make sure you’ve checked where your chosen route starts from. We mainly use the northern approach from Seathwaite (near Keswick) but occasionally go from the west at Wasdale. Scafell Pike can also be accessed from Ambleside towards the East (closer to Windermere).

By Train

Depending on where you’re staying and walking from, you’ll need to get the train to either Kendal Oxenholme station, in the East, or Penrith in the north. From either of these stations, you’ll then need to organise onward travel using a different method of transport.

By Car

The M6 will take you to the Lake District from North or South, then turn off at the A590 for the South Lake District or the A66 for the north.

There aren’t many car hire locations in the Lake District so a more comprehensive search would be required.

By Coach

National Express services run to Penrith from London, Manchester and Birmingham, from as little as £27.50. See below for onward travel.

Local Buses

The Visit Lake District website has plenty of information about public bus routes as well as tour bus options for you to get a good look around.

You can see a map of the public routes from the Stagecoach Bus website to help you plan your journey. Or head to Lake District on Board for a breakdown of the services available.

If your walk starts in Seathwaite, you’ll need to get the number 78 from Keswick to Seatoller then walk about 1km to meet your group. During the summer months, there is a (usually) free shuttle bus from Ravenglass to Wasdale Head.

By Bike

If you enjoy cycling why not use pedal power to come to the beautiful Lake district. Visit Sustrans to find quiet, traffic-calmed and traffic-free routes linked with local roads to bring you to the foot of the England’s tallest mountain.

By Air

Travelling by train is better for the environment, however, a flight can be faster. While Durham Tees Valley is the closest airport to the Lake District, you might find onward travel easier to organise from Manchester or even Glasgow. See other options above for onward travel options to the Lake District.
