Scafell Pike and Lingmell from Wasdale - via Brown Tongue
Climbing Scafell Pike from Wasdale is widely regarded as the most direct and navigationally straightforward route to the highest point in England. This route also includes a rewarding extension to Lingmell, a shapely neighbouring peak with outstanding views over Wasdale and Piers Gill. Expect rocky ground, steep ascents, and dramatic Lakeland scenery throughout - a superb introduction to the mountainous terrain of the Western Fells.

1. Start – NT Lake Head Car Park
The National Trust Lake Head Car Park is the main access point for ascending Scafell Pike from Wasdale. It offers pay-and-display parking, toilets, and a much more sustainable option than parking further into Wasdale Head village.
From the car park, go through the small gate beside the cattle grid and cross the large wooden footbridge over Lingmell Gill. Turn left and follow signs for Eskdale/Miterdale (footpath to Scafell Pike). Continue along the gravel track until you reach a junction, staying straight ahead with Lingmell Gill on your left and passing Brackenclose on your right.
Cross a second bridge over Lingmell Gill to reach its northern bank and continue onto open ground.
2. Ascending Brown Tongue
After the bridge, the path climbs steadily through a gate and onto Open Access land. The trail is rocky in places and follows the gill until a ford is reached. This is normally crossable, but can be difficult after heavy rain.
Once across, the route heads directly up the grassy spur of Brown Tongue - a steep, stepped path with sections of stone pitching. Take your time here; this is the toughest sustained uphill of the day. At around 550m, pass a cairn marking the entrance to Hollow Stones.
3. Through Hollow Stones to Lingmell Col
The next kilometre crosses the spectacular boulder field of Hollow Stones, surrounded by the towering cliffs of Pikes Crag and Scafell Crag. After weaving through this rocky bowl, the path climbs via gentle zig-zags to meet a better-surfaced gravel trail.
At around 750m, reach the broad saddle between Lingmell (left) and Scafell Pike (right). This is Lingmell Col, with superb views across to Great Gable.
Turn right to begin the final climb to Scafell Pike.
4. Final Ascent to Scafell Pike Summit
The summit path heads south-east, zig-zagging through increasingly large boulders. Cairns help mark the way, but in poor visibility pay close attention to direction and bearings.
At approximately 900m you’ll reach a large cairn. Beyond this lies a broad, rocky plateau leading to the unmistakable summit cairn of Scafell Pike - a huge stone structure built atop a natural rocky mound.
Enjoy the panoramic views across the Lake District (weather permitting), then prepare for your descent.
5. Return to Lingmell Col & Ascent of Lingmell
Begin your descent with care, heading north-west from the summit to pick up the correct path back to Lingmell Col. Once back on the saddle, continue straight ahead toward Lingmell.
Cross a low stone wall and follow the rocky mountain path to the summit ridge. Lingmell’s cairn sits atop dramatic boulders above the sheer drop of Lingmell Crag - caution is essential near the edge.
From the summit you’ll enjoy impressive views down Piers Gill, over Styhead Tarn, and back across to the rugged summit plateau of Scafell Pike.
6. Descent via Lingmell’s West Spur
Retrace your steps briefly from the summit, then bear downhill over grassy, rocky slopes toward the old wall. Cross it and keep a general west–south-west line, ensuring the higher ground of Goat Crags remains on your right.
The descent along Lingmell’s long western spur is steep in places but offers breathtaking views over Wast Water and the Wasdale valley. After around 3 km, reach a gate in a stone wall where the route rejoins the main Brown Tongue path.
Continue downhill to the footbridge and follow the gravel path back to Lake Head Car Park.
Planning Tips for This Walk
- Carry appropriate equipment for mountain terrain: map, compass/GPS, layered clothing, and robust footwear.
- Pack enough food and water - the descent is as demanding as the climb.
- Check weather forecasts; cloud, wind, and rain dramatically increase difficulty.
- Avoid the Lingmell Gill ford in spate conditions.
- Start early during busy seasons - Wasdale is popular and car parks can fill quickly.
The Scafell Pike and Lingmell via Brown Tongue route is one of the most iconic walks in the Lake District. Combining accessibility, dramatic mountain scenery, and an optional quieter summit, it is ideal for hikers wanting a rewarding and memorable ascent of England’s highest peak while gaining valuable Lakeland mountain experience.
